Foreign non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have poured aid worth some 75 billion VND (3.5 million USD) in the southern province of Dong Thap over the past three years, improving local living standards via a series of social and charitable projects.
The Prudence Foundation Asia is among the donors. Its recently-ended project has helped 15 elementary schools in the border districts of Hong Ngu and Tan Hong minimise disaster threats. They were provided with necessary facilities and equipment for their teachers and students to learn swimming skills and how to better adapt to climate change.
Thanks to aid of over 3.1 billion USD (140,000 USD) from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, 74 poor households struck by 2011 floods in the communes of Tan Binh and Tan My (Thanh Binh district) were able to build new houses. They have since enjoyed stable lives.
Later in 2012, the European Commission for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection and Save the Children brought aid to over 4,800 households forced to live in makeshift tents in the wake of flooding in the districts of Tan Hong, Hong Ngu and Tam Nong. They received both cash and other gifts worth more than 3.5 billion VND (160,000 USD).
Other provincial projects benefited local children, farmers and women, focusing on promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.
In the coming time, the provincial Union of Friendship Organisations will publicise its 2014-2017 scheme to call for more financial assistance from NGOs, for which the poor, the disabled and those vulnerable to climate change will be the beneficiaries.-VNA
