Nhat Thuy, who recently graduated with plans to become a high school music teacher, beat her opponent in the Sunday finale to be crowned the fifth Vietnam Idol .
Armed with good looks, a stunning singing voice, great music appreciation, and outstanding singing skills acquired during her training in music education from the Military University of Culture and Arts, Thuy defeated her opponent with 52 percent of audiences’ votes.
The girl has not only won over a huge number of audiences but has also received critical acclaim from the show’s jury, all of whom believed she would be the new Vietnam Idol.
She also scored high in result predictions among readers of some local newswires.
Thuy’s triumph has broken the supposed “curse” against alumni of the Military University of Culture and Arts, as Van Mai Huong and Hoang Quyen, two other former students at the school, were named merely runners-up in the show’s 2010 and 2012 seasons.
After being crowned at the finale, instead of performing a victorious song as scheduled, Thuy moved audiences and television viewers to tears with a song titled “Tu Nguyen” (Volunteers) to express her wish to join her people’s protest against the illegal deployment of a giant oil rig by China in Vietnamese waters in the East Vietnam Sea early this month.
Thuy said she will divide her prize into three parts: one part to be shared among the other top three contestants to fulfill a promise they had made; another to be given to those in need in her hometown, and the remainder for her own future musical projects.
As an elementary student, Thuy had to live far away from her parents, who work in a wood factory in southern Dong Nai Province.
She joined a few young bands to work her way through university and fulfill her singing dreams.
