Hanoi police said Tuesday they had arrested four suspects accused of using spyware to steal money from 100,000 Vietnamese mobile phone users.
Three employees of Hanoi-based Soloha construction company and a website owner allegedly lured mobile phone users to download malicious apps from their websites.
The apps made automatic VND15,000 deposits to the gang’s account.
The suspects, aged 23-29, have stolen more than VND2.1 billion (nearly US$100,000) from over 100,000 mobile phone users since late 2013.
In an unrelated case, Hanoi police discovered that the 3G Vietnam Telecommunication Company had used Asterick, a malware program, to automatically make 100,000 missed calls a day to mobile phone users nationwide. When the users called back, their phone calls were diverted to a system of spam lines that charged users VND5,000 per minute.
