An avid photographer and hi-tech aficionado based in Ho Chi Minh City has recently wowed locals with several videos featuring the beauty of Vietnam’s southern hub from stunning aerial views.

Nam Air began to upload videos that captured corners of the city from the sky to his YouTube channel earlier this year, but his two latest uploads have intrigued viewers the most, as they feature the city’s iconic Nha Rong Harbor, Bitexco Tower, and the ‘reborn’ Nhieu Loc canal as seen from a drone.

The footage is not shaky even though it was recorded from a video camera-equipped quadcopter, the movement of which can be affected by factors like clouds, wind, and weather conditions.

A quadcopter, also known as a quadrotor helicopter, is a multirotor helicopter that is lifted and propelled by four rotors. Installing a video camera on the drone and flying it around to film the city from breathtaking views has recently become trendy among some local photography and hi-tech enthusiasts.

Nam Air, known under the nickname of Airblade14 on tinhte.vn, an online forum for local technology enthusiasts, is willing to share his equipment and filming techniques with anyone interested in the trendy hobby.

The young man, who keeps his personal information secret, used a DJI Phantom FC40 quadcopter, equipped with a Gopro Hero 3 with 1080p resolution, to film along a short part of the Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe canal, which spans 8.7km across five districts in HCMC, according to a thread he posted on tinhte.vn on April 20.

Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe used to be nicknamed “a dead canal” due to the fact that it was contaminated with black and smelly waters and was uninhabitable for most creatures.

The canal has recently been ‘reborn’ under a pollution elimination master plan by the municipal government, and looks incredible in Nam Air’s video, which earned more than 8,500 views after a fortnight on YouTube.

Nam Air wrote in another post on tinhte.vn on Saturday that he had installed an anti-shaking device called a gimbal on his drone, in response to other forum members’ questions regarding how his quadcopter could move stably during the filming process above the canal.

A gimbal is a pivoted support that allows the rotation of an object around a single axis.

The gimbal helps allow a balanced movement for the video camera,” he said in a self-filmed video included with his post.

The position of the camera remains unchanged no matter how the drone is moving.”
