21,500 businesses shut down in Jan-Apr

VietNamNet Bridge – The number of enterprises that shut down in the January-April period was nearly 21,500, up 9.4% year-on-year.

A report of the National Business Registration Department under the Ministry of Planning and Investment says that of the 21,500 enterprises, 4,725 temporarily suspended operations, up 9.2%, and nearly 3,300 indefinitely stopped doing business, up 7.2%. Meanwhile, the others stopped operating without reporting to the department, up 10.1%.



The sectors seeing the increasingly high number of closures are healthcare and social assistance (47.2%), education and training (35.6%), and information and communication technology (31.8%).


However, difficulties of some sectors tended to slide with the number of enterprises operating in the finance-banking-insurance sectors down 3.3% and in other services down 27.2%.


The closed enterprises were mainly in big cities like HCMC with 7,617 units, Hanoi with 4,582 units, Haiphong with 585 units and Danang with 660 units.


Meanwhile, 5,863 businesses resumed operations in the four-month period, mainly in the sectors of wholesale, retail and auto repair.


There were 25,719 enterprises registered in the first four months with total chartered capital of VND143.4 trillion, up 8.1% and 16.2% year-on-year respectively.


Nevertheless, the Mekong Delta region witnessed a decline of 9.6% in business startups in January-April compared to last year’s same period. The strong fall was reported in Hau Giang Province (40.5%), Tra Vinh Province (39.8%) and Soc Trang Province (34%).
