PANO – Vietnamese Minister of National Defence, General Phung Quang Thanh, and his counterpart Kim Kwan Jin of the Republic of Korea (RoK) agreed to continue boosting bilateral defence cooperation under the inked Memorandum of Understanding to have more delegation and young officer exchanges, expansion of naval cooperation and sharing experiences in UN peace-keeping operations.
The agreement was reached at the talks between General Phung Quang Thanh and Korean Minister Kim Kwan Jin on March 31st at the Korean Defence Ministry’s Headquarters during the official visit to the RoK of the Vietnamese Defence Minister and his entourage from March 30th to April 1st.
In the atmosphere of friendship and mutual trust, the two ministers discussed the two countries’ ties and expressed their pleasure at the fruits of their friendship and comprehensive cooperation including defence cooperation, especially since the two countries established the strategic partnership in 2009.
They laid stress on the contributions of visits and senior exchanges, especially their regular defence strategic dialogue at Deputy Ministerial level, to consolidating and enhancing the bilateral friendship and mutual trust.
General Phung Quang Thanh emphasized that Vietnam attaches much importance to its ties with the Republic of Korea, considering it one of the priorities in its external policy. Thus, this visit aims to boost the defence ties in accordance with their potential and the strategic partnership.
For his part, Minister Kim Kwan Jin highly appreciated the Vietnamese military delegation’s visit, considering it an important factor to further promote bilateral defence cooperation.
Stressing the historical and cultural similarities between Vietnam and RoK, the host held that RoK highly values Vietnam’s position and role in the region and wishes to further boost the effective and sustainable cooperation with Vietnam.
Also at the talks, the two ministers reached consensus on maintaining effectively the defence dialogue at Deputy Ministerial level, expanding cooperation on information technology, organizing more exchanges on training and defence industry, cooperating in unexploded ordnance clearance.
They both agreed that efficient defence cooperation would contribute to deepening the two countries’ ties, meeting the interests of the two peoples and to consolidating peace, stability and development in the region.
On the occasion, General Phung Quang Thanh invited his Korean counterpart to pay an official visit to Vietnam and the host accepted the invitation with pleasure.
As part of the visit to RoK, Minister Phung Quang Thanh visited the Korean Coast Guard High Command and Panmunjeom (Gyeonggi Province), received Poongsan Group, Hyundai Heavy Industries, and talked with officials of the Vietnamese Embassy in RoK.
