Ha Nam cow breeders look to the future

The northern province of Ha Nam plans to transform dairy cow farming into a key segment of its local economic development.

The locality is striving to raise an additional 2,000 dairy cows by 2015 and increase the amount to a maximum of 8,000 by 2020.

To realise the goal, local authorities have concentrated on improving cattle farms which will house a herd of 10 heads, as well as asking the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development to help farmers borrow with an interest rate of around 8 percent per year.

The province has also called for support from Dutch partners, including the animal feed manufacturer De Heus, and invited the country’s experts and farmers to provide technical instructions and experiences in the field.

Local farmers currently raise nearly 500 milk cows, producing dairy products worth 15 billion VND (711,000 USD) per year.-VNA
