Nhan Dan Online – Celebrations of the Khmer people’s Chol Chnam Thmay Festival, will be re-enacted at the Culture-Tourism Village of Vietnamese Ethnic Groups in Hanoi on April 15.
The event, taking place at the Khmer Buddhist temple complex of the village, is part of a wide range of activities to mark the Day of Vietnamese Ethnic Culture, which falls on April 19.
According to the organisers, the re-enactment of the Chol Chnam Thmay Festival will follow demonstrations of the traditional practices of Khmer Buddhism, which include bathing Buddha statues, praying for an auspicious new year at a temple and offering food to Buddhist monks and visitors.
The Chol Chnam Thmay Festival in Hanoi is expected to see the attendance of dignitaries of the Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha, representatives of Theravada Buddhism, as well as local and international visitors from Sri Lanka, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand.
The Chol Chnam Thmay Festival is the traditional new year of the Khmer communities, which usually falls on the third lunar month and lasts for three days.
It also marks the end of the dry season and heralds the start of a new farming season.
