An 8-year-old boy allegedly beaten up by his father succumbed to his injuries at a leading hospital in Hanoi Tuesday.
Do Doan Loc from the northern province of Bac Ninh was admitted to Viet Duc Hospital late on Saturday evening in a coma with blood clots in his brain, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.
He had dilated pupils and bruises all over his swollen face, right hand and left leg.
Doctors put him on a respirator but said his chances for survival were very low.
The family said he had been badly beaten by his father Do Van Loi that morning, and Loi had left the boy unconscious until the afternoon before taking him to the hospital.
Doan Thi Binh, the boy’s aunt, said Loc’s parents were both been imprisoned for drug trafficking when he was first born, Loi for seven years and the mother for 20 years.
Binh and another aunt took care of him until his father was released early last year and took him into his custody.
“We’re only aware now that his father has been beating him very often. This time was the worst. He was beaten by a large smoking pipe,” the teary Binh said.
The father escaped on Saturday but was arrested two days later by Bac Ninh police.
A Bac Ninh officer said that according to neighbors, Loc has been beaten regularly by his father ever since the two were recently joined by a woman and her three children.
Lawyers said that with his past history, Loc could face the death penalty for killing a child.
