(Cinet)- A project to develop craft villages in Quang Nam Province sponsored by UNESCO has paid off after two years’ implementation, helping craftsmen in the locality boost production and promote tourism, according to a review seminar in the province’s Hoi An Town on March 12.
The project, launched in February 2012 and funded by the Korean Trust Fund through UNESCO, aims to support tourism development in Quang Nam province’s craft villages, especially in areas near UNESCO-recognised Hoi An Ancient Town and the My Son Relics.
Nearly 240 participating households and enterprises have received training in developing their business skills, including management, design, arrangement, and popularisation of products.
Artisans and producers have developed over 30 new handicraft products, featuring traditional Vietnamese culture and meeting market demands.
Katherine Muller-Marin, head of the UNESCO Office in Vietnam, said that the project shows the close coordination between local authorities, United Nations offices, social organizations and artisans, and its success has positively impacted society.
Huynh Khanh Toan, vice chairman of Quang Nam Province, highly evaluated what the project has brought about for the province during the last two years.
“The project is small in terms of finance but what it has produced is practical and effective. It has helped craft villages to develop and honor the values of traditional cultural handicraft products as well as to bring more income for local residents,” said Toan.
