Nhan Dan – With a total of 7 points, Vietnamese Grandmaster Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son has won the HDBank International Open Chess Tournament for the first time.

Truong Son met Chinese player Ni Hua in the final match. He aimed for a draw, which he achieved in 23 moves.

The grandmaster grabbed 7 points over nine rounds. By doing so, he equalled the score of Zhang Zhong but ended up taking the title with a better sub-index.

Earlier, Truong Son unexpectedly defeated top Vietnamese chess player and International Super Grandmaster Le Quang Liem.

The tension and the appeal of the game was evident from the opening moves, when Quang Liem took advantage of playing the white pawns to gain the upper hand over Truong Son.

However, Truong Son showed alertness in dealing with Quang Liem’s moves, and Quang Liem made a mistake in the 53rd move. From here, Truong Son started to exploit the weaknesses to gain the advantage before winning the game after 63 moves.
