Quang Tri clears UXO in residential areas

(VOV) – Since 1999, the central province of Quang Tri has removed more than 130,000 explosive devices and 2,500 landmines left over from the war.

However, leftover unexploded ordinance (UXO) is lingering on the war-torn land, badly affecting the everyday life of local people.

Over the past decades, the Mine Advisory Group (MAG) – a not-for-profit organisation clearing landmines, unexploded ordnance (UXO) and other remnants – has made a great effort in defusing and clearing bombs and mines to preserve the environment and more importantly protect local residents’ lives

MAG has cleaned up more than 614 hectares of contaminated land for local people to live, cultivate and build social welfare projects.

Le Van Tra, MAG coordinator, said more than 1.5 million people have benefitted from the program so far.

Tra said anyone who detects any UXO should call the emergency number 18001742 and a team will be deployed to deal with the problem.

Landmine clearance in crowded residential areas is a difficult task, but, thanks to close cooperation from local authorities and people, the work has obtained significant success.
