THUA THIEN – HUE (VNS) — The central city’s Hoang Quy Phuoc broke his own record in the men’s 400m freestyle with a time of 3 minutes 55.24 seconds at the National Short-Course Swimming Championship yesterday.
He shaved 1.07 seconds off the old record (3 minutes 56.17 seconds) set at the championship last year.
HCM City’s women’s team completed the 400m medley relay in the record time of 4 minutes 25.79 seconds, 1.79 seconds faster than the record they set last year.
Saigonese Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen added two golds to her collection of seven gold medals at the championship.
Phuoc shone on the third day of the competition with two golds in the men’s 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly before setting the new record.
This is his ninth gold at the championship. Da Nang is leading the medal tally at the championship with nine gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
HCM City is in second place with eight golds and five bronzes.
Phuoc, with a 1.93m arm span, hopes to win more gold medals in the last two days of the competition since he won 15 gold medals and set six records last year.
At the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2011 held in Indonesia, Phuoc brought to an end a 49-year wait by Viet Nam for a gold medal in the SEA Games when he bagged a gold in the men’s 100-metre butterfly and broke the SEA Games record.
At the Southeast Asian Clubs Championship in HCM City in 2009, he took home eight golds.
