Nhan Dan – The Ministry of Traffic on March 15 reinitiated the construction of a waterway for heavyweight vessels on the Hau River in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh.
The project initially received investment in the form of Government bonds worth VND929.3 billion (US$44.25 million) for the 2009-2010 period, but the work was ultimately postponed in 2010 due to a lack of capital.
In a bid to address the funding issue, the National Assembly issued a resolution this January to allocate VND 6.1 trillion (US$290.47 million) in government bonds for the first stage of the VND9.781 trillion (US$465.76 million) project.
With project completion expected by 2017, the 46.5-kilometre waterway, which runs through Duyen Hai and Tra Cu districts in Tra Vinh Province will allow ships up to 20,000 deadweight tonnage to travel on the river.
