Favorable start

We arrived at Hoi Do market (Hai Duong city) on the afternoon of March 8. Although it was raining a lot, there were still many visitors and shoppers.

An airy and clean space and spacious booths with plentiful, diverse, and reasonably priced items were the general perception of those coming to the market.

Though there were not many customers to Hoi Do market after two days of opening, goods were still saleable every day, as reflected by small traders.

“I have bought an electric rice cooker and a few clothes. The prices of items here are very affordable,” said Nguyen Thi Hong Thuy, a citizen in Hoang Quoc Viet street (Hai Duong city).

“My family have moved goods here for sale since the 10th day of the Lunar New Year. Since then,

“I know it will be very difficult at first, but I must overcome obstacles and soon start business activities to not only earn income but also lure customers to the new market.”

goods have sold well every day, bringing me from several hundred thousand dong to VND1 million – VND2 million per day. Although the amount is not as much as in the past, we still sell goods to create market atmosphere and attract buyers,” said Tran Thi Thu Ha, saleswoman of Thanh Toan grocery.

To lure more people to the market, Hai Duong city on March 6 opened the Ornamental Creature Exhibition Fair with the participation of Ornamental Creature Associations from 10 provinces and cities. The exhibition featured nearly 4,000 products around the precinct of Hoi Do market, including many kinds of bonsai with high artistic values, making the atmosphere in the area outside the market also more crowded and joyful.

“Our association has brought over 20 plants to the fair, many of which are worth billions of dong. It has been raining for the past few days; however, there have been a lot of customers and fairly active transactions,” said Do Van Tuyen, Vice Chairman of the Tu Minh ward’s Ornamental Creature Association (Hai Duong city).

Many more promotional activities needed

Through conversations, most small traders were satisfied with the facilities and spacious and clean space of Hoi Do market. Nonetheless, to attract more people to the market, the small traders hoped Hai Duong city will organize more promotional activities and fairs.

Hai Duong city has arranged signposts showing the way to the market; nevertheless, they are small and not really eye-catching.

“Some of my younger siblings are workers in Tan Truong industrial park but do not know where Hoi Do market is. There is a signpost on Nguyen Luong Bang street, but it is too small and can be noticed only with real attention,” said Tran Thi Phuong, a small trader selling clothes in block C. “We hope the city will install additional signposts and hold more promotional activities so that many people will know Hoi Do market. Only then can small traders sell goods.”
