Nhan Dan Online – Chairman of the Thua Thien-Hue Provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Van Cao and Tekimiti Gilbert, Head of German APOPO´s Mine Action Department signed a memorandum on March 12 approving a EUR258,000 project to clear unexploded ordnance (UXO) in A Luoi District throughout 2014.

The project, which is financed by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is intended to improve UXO clearance techniques and build a database on bomb and missile clearance in Thua Thien-Hue Province.

Accordingly, technical and non-technical examinations and clearances are to be conducted in the district, and information management tools will be developed to support clearance efforts.

The project is expected to help the province rid itself of UXO, which directly threatens the property and lives of local residents. This will in turn contribute to eradicating hunger, reducing poverty and fostering local socio-economic development.

In addition to this project, the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs has helped the province make improvements in education, training, heritage preservation, livelihood support, resettlement and natural disaster prevention, said Cao.
