Devising strategies and policies for the operation of the International Mekong River Commission

The 2nd summit of International Mekong River Commission – MRC will take place in Ho Chi Minh City on April 5th 2014, the content of which is discussions on the development and management of the Mekong River and related resources. This is a state-level conference held every four years, involving the prime ministers of four MRC member countries: Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.


On the advent of the summit, on April 2nd and 3rd, international conferences will be held on the trans-border management of water resource with the participation of 250 delegates, who are ministers and senior professionals coming from government institutions/departments, representatives from the four member countries of the Mekong River Commission international, international organizations and scholars. International conferences ahead of the summit will focus on issues of water, energy and food security in the context of ongoing climate change. The effect of ladder chains of dams on the Lancang (Mekong River in China) on the downstream and hydropower development are also discussed.


The summit participants will discuss current challenges in the development of the Mekong river basin and outline strategies and policies for the operation of the MRC. Bilateral meetings will also take place during the day April 4th 2014, before the day of the summit.
