The reactor was built in 1960 with a capacity to generate 250 kilowatt-hours. It was put into use generating nuclear power from 1963 to 1968. The reactor was put out of use after that.

It was restored and expanded with assistance from the Russian government in 1984 with a capacity to generate 500 kilowatt-hours.

By the end of 2013, the reactor was effectively running for 37,800 hours servicing radioisotope production, basic research, and application research.

The reactor will aid in nuclear technology development.

President Truong Tan Sang honored the Third-Class Independence Medal to the Da Lat Nuclear Research Institute.
