Police in a central Vietnamese province have detained two foreigners for stealing bank account information.
>> Bulgarian caught withdrawing money with fake ATM card
Eduard Kaprelov Nersezov, 46, with Bulgarian nationality, and Iulian Dumbarava, 26, a Romanian national, were arrested Wednesday while they were removing an electronic device from an ATM booth in Nha Trang, the provincial capital of Khanh Hoa Province.
They had installed the device in the machine on Biet Thu Street in Loc Tho Ward to steal the account information of customers when they withdrew money at the ATM booth, local police said.
The Nha Trang police had earlier launched an investigation that led to the arrest following a local bank’s report that someone fixed electronic devices and cameras in its ATMs to steal cardholders’ account information.
On searching the room of the two foreigners at a hotel on Phan Boi Chau Street, police detected and seized four cameras, two card-skimming devices, eight bank cards, a laptop, three mobile phones, and other tools.
At the police office, Nersezov admitted that a person in Bulgaria asked him in late January to go to Ho Chi Minh City to meet Dumbarava for a scheme to steal bank account details to appropriate money.
The two men later arrived in Nha Trang to carry out their plan, Nersezov said.
Police are expanding their investigation into the case.
A fortnight ago, another Bulgarian man, 28-year-old Stoyanoy Yuliyan Georgiev, was caught red-handed attempting to withdraw money from Asia Commercial Bank (ACB) with a fake ATM card in Ho Chi Minh City.
The man was seized at an ATM booth of the bank on Do Quang Dau Street in District 1 on March 13.
The police seized from the foreigner VND55 million (US$2,600) in cash, 55 credit cards, 240 unidentified cards, and a suitcase containing nearly VND1 billion ($47,430) in cash.
