March 13, 2014 – According to statistics of the Department of Transport, 119 out ot 162 suspension bridges in 9 mountainous districts of Quang Nam Province were damaged.
Among these mountainous districts, the ones with largest number of hanging bridges are Nam Tra My (83 bridges), Tay Giang (22 bridges), and Bac Tra My (20 bridges). There are 56 hanging bridges and 63 temporary ones seriously damaged, which can put travelers in danger at any time.
Right after the bridge-collapsing incident at Chu Va 6 village in Lai Chau Province causing 8 deaths and over 10 injuries, Quang Nam PPC requested mountainous districts to promptly examine their hanging bridges and repair damaged ones before this year rainy season.
Besides, the Provincial Transportation Safety Board sent a group to check severely damaged suspension bridges. This Board would cooperated with the related districts to make plans for maintaining these bridges, however, they would set up warning signs at all suspension bridges before doing maintenance work.
