Authorities blocked access to Fansipan, the tallest peak in Indochina, last Friday (January 24) to enable upgrade of a national park in the northwest.
The Hoang Lien National Park in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai has told travel companies not to bring tourists until the end of March while it cleans up and restores the area. Fansipan is located in the park.
Nguyen Quang Vinh, the park’s director, told online newspaper VnExpress that sleet and frost last December had knocked down many big trees and destroyed roads leading to the park.

Plants have dried up, posing a serious risk of bush fires, he said.
“We have banned tourism activities in the park to clean up, restore roads, and carry out anti-fire measures.”
Local residents owning fields in the vicinity are allowed to enter, but must inform rangers.
Slash-and-burn activities have also been prohibited.
