Dragon Bridge wins lighting prize

DA NANG (VNS) — The ASA Lighting Design Studio Company has won the Lighting Design award at the 2013 FX International Design Awards in London.

Company director Tran Van Thanh told Viet Nam News yesterday that the lighting design of the Rong (Dragon) Bridge over the Han River in the central Da Nang city beat tough contenders at the awards, including some of the bravest and most innovative design projects.

He said the awards were presented in seven categories.

Thanh added that the Dragon Bridge’s lighting design has been shortlisted in the 2014 Lighting Design Awards for International Projects (Interiors) category, from among 85 designs in 13 categories.

The award winners will be announced at the London Hilton, Park Lane, in London on March 20.

Last year, the Dragon Bridge won the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Diamond Award in the category of structural systems.

The 666m bridge was inaugurated on the city’s Liberation Day on March 2 last year and is in the shape of a dragon. The dragon’s head is designed to spit fire on Saturday and Sunday nights, and spray water during the daytime.

The 500m-long body of the dragon was built by using five 1.2m arched steel pipes weighing 1,000 tonnes in total. The six-lane bridge is illuminated by 5,000 LED lights at night.

The central city’s department of transport has applied for recognition by the Guinness World Records of the bridge as having the “largest steel dragon’. — VNS
