Many consumers also say they prefer to shop at supermarkets, believing that these places are honest about the quality and origin of their merchandise. For their part, the supermarkets always claim they have transparent policies to assure consumers of the quality of their goods. All of this contributes to a gradual transition in which more market-goers are going to supermarkets, even though prices are often higher. However, supermarkets have been hurt by recent scandals in which they had to refund their customers after selling poor quality products and items of dubious origin. The questionable quality of goods sold at supermarkets has been in the headlines over the last year, making shoppers wonder who they can trust. Undermined trust In one of the latest cases, many Chinese dried food products were found at supermarkets in the southern city with labels claiming they were of Vietnamese origin. Dried edible mushrooms are for sale at supermarkets in the city at much higher prices than at small markets. They bear Vietnamese labels, but the information on the labels only indicates that the products are packaged, rather than manufactured, by Vietnamese facilities. Employees at one such facility confessed to Tuoi Tre reporters that these are Chinese products sourced from <a href="http://bit.ly/1huM9ek">Binh Tay</a> market in the city’s District 6, and that they are only packaged in Vietnam. Once packaged with misleading Vietnamese labels, the Chinese products fetch much more money, some traders revealed. In mid-March this year, a consumer reported to Tuoi Tre that the pork she had bought at a Big C supermarket branch in Go Vap District was infected with cysticerci, commonly known as pork measles. The customer complained to the supermarket chain, which eventually admitted to the infection and gave her a refund. <a href="http://bit.ly/1iUTGmH">In April</a> 2013, Big C was also involved in a product origin scandal. One of its Hanoi outlets was found selling grapes that they claimed were grown in the central province of <a href="http://bit.ly/1jP56HI">Ninh Thuan</a>, while their labels bore Chinese flags. Who to blame? When confronted with these scandals, supermarket representatives all protested that they are victims of dishonest distributors. But they cannot dodge their responsibility to customers because they should have checked carefully before closing contracts with the suppliers, as well as examined the products before putting them on their shelves. The relevant regulatory authorities should also be to blame for the issue, as they seemingly neglect checks on the quality and origin of products sold in supermarkets. The market watchdog has conducted regular raids of markets, but no inspections have ever been done of the products at supermarkets. Relatives of the dead, who have fought for two decades to overturn the original verdicts of accidental death, gathered at a purpose-built court near Warrington, east of Liverpool. Some wore scarves in the red and white of Liverpool, while others carried photographs of their loved ones who were crushed to death on an overcrowded terrace at an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest in the stadium in Sheffield. Fresh inquests were ordered after the original coroner’s verdicts were quashed by the High Court in December 2012. (AFP) </div> Charlotte Hennessy, who was six when her father James died in the disaster, said as she arrived at the court that the families had waited a long time to learn more about what happened to their relatives on April 15, 1989. “It’s been a long, long fight. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end,” she said. “It was a bit of an emotional wreck this weekend, I’ve not slept a wink. But this is the beginning now, hopefully it can be put right.” The inquests, held in the presence of a jury, could last more than nine months. John Goldring, a Court of Appeal judge who is acting as coroner, will open the hearing with a statement to the court. Relatives will then be invited to read out “pen portraits” of all the victims over the next month. The hearing will then break for several weeks for lawyers to sift through new pathological evidence into how each of the 96 died. Jurors are expected to hear evidence on issues such as stadium safety, the management of the crowd and the response of the emergency services. The court will also be shown at least an hour of previously unseen BBC television footage of the disaster unfolding that has only recently been discovered. Inquests seek to examine the circumstances in which the deceased came by their deaths but do not apportion blame. Two new investigations into the disaster are also running — a criminal inquiry and a probe by the police watchdog, which said last week it had interviewed 13 retired or serving police officers on suspicion of offences including manslaughter and perverting the course of justice. No one has yet been charged with a criminal offence. Andy Burnham, a lawmaker from the opposition Labour Party who has played a leading role in the families’ campaign, said they finally had hope of justice being done. He told Sky News from the court: “Twenty-five years. The families have waited all that time for justice and I think finally it is on its way. “This is a momentous day for them. Most people thought we’d never see it, but we have and the reason we have seen it is because of their dignity, their courage. They never gave in.” Burnham said that only in the last few weeks had some of the families found out “basic things” about what happened to their relatives that day. Andy Carroll, formerly a striker with Sunderland’s arch north-east rivals Newcastle, headed West Ham into an early lead and Mohamed Diame made it 2-0 to the London club shortly after half-time. Sunderland substitute Adam Johnson pulled a goal back for the hosts in the 65th minute to the joy of the Stadium of Light crowd but they were unable to build on that. Victory took 11th placed West Ham onto 37 points, three short of the traditional survival mark of 40, but the result meant Sunderland stayed second bottom on 25 points, four shy of safety with eight games remaining. The game was only nine minutes old when Carroll, a £15 million ($25m, 18m euros) signing from Liverpool, scored only his second goal of the season as he rose highest to head in Mark Noble’s corner. Gus Poyet’s Sunderland, had chances of their own and were convinced they should have had a penalty when Hammers midfielder Kevin Nolan appeared to handle inside his own area. But referee Howard Webb rejected Sunderland defender John O’Shea’s furious plea for a spot-kick and let play continue. West Ham, whose manager Sam Allardyce was booed by Hammers fans in their last game despite overseeing a 2-1 win against Hull at Upton Park, dominated the remainder of the half without adding another goal. However, that changed five minutes after the interval when after Carroll had muscled O’Shea out of the way, Diame’s deflected shot from 12 yards out left Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone flat-footed before trickling into the net. Mannone though kept Sunderland in the match by preventing the Hammers going 3-0 up when he turned away Stewart Downing’s shot after a ball over the top left him clean through on goal. The worth of that save became clear when Johnson, who’d already looked sharp during his few minutes on the field, gave Sunderland renewed hope. Connor Wickham flicked the ball to Craig Gardner and his resulting through ball was struck into the top corner from just inside the penalty area by Johnson. The goal inspired both Sunderland and their fans, the Black Cats surging forward in search of an equaliser. Sunderland nearly made it 2-2 when Hammers keeper Adrian couldn’t hold South Korean midfielder Ki Sung-yeung low strike from 20 yards. United are currently 17 points off the pace in the Premier League and probably need to win the Champions League to qualify for next season’s competition, but Giggs says that they are undaunted by the prospect of facing Bayern in Tuesday’s first leg at Old Trafford. “Bayern are a fantastic team,” said the midfielder at Monday’s pre-game press conference. “They are the holders and Pep Guardiola has taken over and added a few new players, and they are a very strong team. “They’re the favourites in most people’s eyes. But we are Manchester United and at Old Trafford we have had so many great nights. “We don’t see ourselves as underdogs; we see ourselves as Manchester United playing at home. It is going to be tough, but it is always is in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. We are looking forward to it.” Giggs, 40, is the only surviving member of the United team that famously stunned Bayern with two injury-time goals in the final of the 1999 tournament in Barcelona. He has now taken up a player-coach role, but when he was asked by a journalist if he could ever see himself succeeding Moyes, he was prevented from answering by the United press officer. United’s struggles have seen Moyes’s position come under scrutiny in recent weeks, particularly in the light of 3-0 losses at home to both Liverpool and Manchester City. However, the Scot was bullish when asked about the prospect of taking on Guardiola, who led former club Barcelona to victory over United in the final in both 2009 and 2011. “I am really looking forward to coming up against him,” Moyes said. “It is the first time I have done, but I have no doubt I will be doing it many times in the future.” Giggs, seated beside Moyes in a suite at Old Trafford, also sought to play down media speculation that he had fallen out with the former Everton manager. From rivers to markets <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGOvm">Can Gio District</a> features a wide variety of shellfish from salt, brackish, and fresh waters. Apart from the businesses that cultivate shellfish at stationary sites on a large scale, most natural collectors are dependent on the rivers and tides. One night on the April 30 beach, some thousand locals were seen raking for shellfish. The light of their torches glared in the night over a 2-3km stretch of water. <a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEazb">According to Kim Thanh</a>, a shellfish dealer on the 30-4 beach, shellfish collectors/scavengers wait for the tides to retreat and then scour the beach for <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGOvn">clams</a>, oysters, <a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEazc">mussels</a>, and scallops during the five or six hours before the tides rise again. “On good days I can purchase dozens of kilograms a day and up to 200kg at a time. With more than 10 dealers like me, the April 30 beach alone can yield many tons of shellfish a day,” Thanh said. <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGOvo">Phan Van Hieu</a>, owner of Tu Hieu shop in <a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEcXR">Can Thanh Town</a>, said that a household of two or three laborers can collect 5-7kg of shellfish and earn VND100,000-200,000 (US$4.8-9.5) a day. <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGOvp">According to Chin Liem</a>, head of the <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGRaD">Hang Duong</a> market management, the market houses over 40 seafood stalls, which mostly offer shellfish to tourists and sell them in bulk to shops in HCMC. Within only a few hours, a large portion of the shellfish is brought to the Binh Dien wholesale market in HCMC’s suburban <a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEcXV">Binh Chanh District</a>, which sells aquatic products and seafood from other provinces. The shellfish at the Binh Dien market fetch slightly higher prices than in Can Gio. ‘Ngheu’ (clams) are sold for VND25,000-35,000 ($1.2-1.7) per kg, ‘hau’ (mussels) for VND16,000-25,000 ($0.8-1.2) per kg, and ‘oc len’ and ‘oc mo’ (<a href="http://bit.ly/1okGRaG">different kinds of snails</a>) for VND100,000-150,000 ($4.8-7.1) per kg. The market is home to 442 seafood stalls, which supply roughly 1,000 tons of produce, including some 200 tons of shellfish, to HCMC residents on average per day, <a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEcXZ">Nguyen Dang Phu</a>, vice director of Binh Dien, said. <a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEcY1">At Binh Dien</a> from midnight until 3:00 am, many sacks of shellfish weighing some 100-120kg are loaded onto trucks and transported to inner city markets. The trucks are packed with saltwater and ice to ensure the shellfish stay as fresh as possible, for fresh mollusks make an aromatic, richly flavored snack that is perfectly textured, neither too hard nor too tender. Into sidewalk stalls, eateries, restaurants In the past decades, several HCMC eateries have become famous for their signature shellfish dishes. These include ‘oc gao’ (‘rice’ snails) shops on <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGRaJ">Ky Dong Street in District</a> 3, ‘chem chep’ (<a href="http://bit.ly/1okGRaK">a type of mussel</a>) stores on <a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEazk">Ben Chuong Duong Street in District</a> 1, ‘oc len xao dua’ (snails stirred with coconut sauce) eateries on <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGRaL">Ho Hao Hon Street in District</a> 1, and ‘oc dua bo cay’ (‘<a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEazn">coconut’ snails served with spicy butter</a>) shops on <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGRaM">Le Van Sy Street in District</a> 3. The well-loved snack is also widely available at numerous sidewalk stalls, particularly at night, when clients relish the mollusks over beer. A number of foreigners have gone from surprise to delight at the delicacy and soon become faithful patrons of the stalls. The mollusks are boiled, steamed, baked, and stirred tastily, and awaken all the senses when eaten. Essential to the taste and texture of the mollusks is the preliminary cleaning process, unique for each type of shellfish. Shellfish should be properly prepared, cleaned, and preserved as they may carry parasites, according to <a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEazq">Bui Thi Suong</a>, vice chair of the <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGOvz">Saigon Professional Chef Association</a>. Due attention should be taken to make sure that baked ‘oc nhay’ (‘<a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEaPG">hopping’ snails</a>) are cleansed of all sand particles, that “oc dua” (‘coconut’ snails) are intact and have part of their shells in their mouths, and that ‘so duong’ (<a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEden">a kind of scallop</a>) do not smell unpleasant. Skilled cooks have their own secrets to keep the snails’ internal organs intact even when they have been pulled out of their shells. <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGRaN">On Thanh Thai</a>, known as a “<a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEaPI">snail street</a>” in District 10, several large shops boast tanks containing live mollusks. Such shops can also be found on District 1′s <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGRaO">Tran Hung Dao Street</a>, which used to be one of the city’s hot spots for mollusks. Some hundred mollusk shops line Vinh Khanh, <a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEaPJ">Hoang Dieu</a>, and <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGRr3">Ton Dan Streets in District</a> 4. These roadside eateries greatly appeal to Western backpackers as well as tourists from other Asian countries. Shops on the expanded section of D2 Street and Ung Van Khiem Street in Binh Thanh District have recently offered new services, including snail buffets. Large coal stoves are placed at the front of the shops, luring in pedestrians with the pervasive and irresistible smell of the cooking mollusks. In recent years, the rustic delicacy has also made its way to restaurants and shops frequented by office workers at lunchtime. The mollusks there are mostly prepared with Western recipes, such as ‘ngao’ (<a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEaPK">a kind of clam</a>) steamed with milk, ‘hau’ (<a href="http://bit.ly/1okGOvD">oysters</a>) baked with butter and garlic, and snails specially prepared with cheese or steamed with wine, offering novel and delectable tastes. Mollusks are preferred by clients partly because they are relatively safe for human consumption and are beneficial to one’s health, as they contain a high concentration of calcium. There is also a wide variety of shellfish to choose from, including new types imported from Thailand, Taiwan, and Canada. A dish of snails generally fetches some VND40,000-55,000 ($1.9-2.6).
