Fish massage at cafes At a café that offers fish massage services on <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGOeW">Truong Chinh Street in District</a> 12, a group of local high school students arrived on a hot weekend for a 30-minute massage. The students’ initial anxiety changed to intrigue and delight as they put their legs into the fish tank. Instantly a school of thousands of tiny fish swarmed between their legs, enthusiastically ripping away the youths’ dead skin with their small, toothless mouths. “It was quite tickly at first, and then it began to tingle curiously. We had a great time, having smoothies, making jokes, and watching the fish gently gnawing at our legs,” shared Thao, a member of the group. According to attendant <a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEa2o">Thuy Vy</a>, the tank is the café’s largest, home to over 7,000 fish. “The fish’s sense of smell is particularly acute; one just needs to put their legs in the water for a few seconds before they swim over. The school can serve up to some hundred clients a day without slowing down a bit,” Vy said. The attendant’s job involves serving drinks, watching over their clients, and making sure that they move their legs gently so as not to accidentally crush the fish to death. A 30-minute massage session and a drink costs VND50,000 (US$2.4) each. Students get half-price discounts, so the venue is invariably packed on weekends. Clients gather around the fish tanks, with their drinks placed on the edges of the tanks or on a small floating platform in the middle of the water. Several local families have also chosen the place for weekend outings. “My children told me to come here so that the fish will eat away all my peeling leg skin. The small creatures did an excellent job, and it was really fun,” said 70-year-old <a href="http://bit.ly/1kmEa2r">Tran Thanh</a>, of <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGQU4">Tan Binh District</a>, who came with his grandchild. A number of female clients also request a body fish massage, believing that dipping their bodies in the water and having the fish “<a href="http://bit.ly/1okGOeY">sanitize</a>” them some 40 minutes a week can help perfect their complexion. Before doing so, clients must shower to cleanse themselves of all cosmetics and chemicals, which may poison and kill the fish. During our 4-day trip, my daughter insisted that I take her here,” said Ito, adding that the service is not so popular in Japan. <a href="http://bit.ly/1kmE9LL">According to Vuong</a>, manager of spa Z. on Bui Thi Xuan Street in District 1, the service requires painstaking care of the fish. Fish massage enters homes According to fish massage dealers in HCMC, to prevent sharing the tanks with others and risking their health, some people choose to install their own tanks at home. <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGQUc">La Nghia Hung</a>, of <a href="http://bit.ly/1kmE9LP">Tan Hung Ward in District</a> 7, one of the local major dealers, said that those with spacious houses and gardens prefer building cement tanks, while those with less space choose to have glass aquariums. During their field trip, the artists had a chance to exchange with Ban Me photography club and visited villages, tourist attractions, farms and factories in Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Dak Lak and Lam Dong provinces. The beauty of the golden paddy fields, riverbanks, lotus ponds, and white storks found in the area have become an inspiration for artists, attracting several filmmakers. Western photographers have also come to take photos of the beautiful typical Vietnamese countryside found within one of the most crowded and modern cities in the country. If visiting during a harvest, tourists may get the chance to have a hands-on farming experience thanks to the friendly local farmers who are willing to show visitors how to cut rice, offer guests cups of tea or coffee, and share amusing stories. Nguyen Kim Hoang, a local farmer, told Tuoitrenews that locals usually start to clean their fields every March and grow rice at the beginning of April for the summer and fall harvest. The remaining crop will be prepared so that they can harvest right before Tet, Vietnam’s Lunar New Year. Previously, Ward 28 was made up of 40 households, which have recently increased to 50. Eighty percent of the households farm and breed animals. On the decrease However, in recent years, rice production in the area has been decreasing due to poor weather and pests. Moreover, older farmers in the area are becoming the last paddy growers in the Thanh Da peninsula since younger generations have shown no interest in the job, as it offers an unstable income and is being replaced by jobs more suitable for the era of modernization, industrialization, and urbanization. “My children have their own jobs, only I work in the fields until I can no longer do the job. They can sell the farms if they want,” <a href="http://bit.ly/1okGQnf">Huynh Cong Ut</a>, 60, said. <a href="http://bit.ly/1kmE9eL">Sau Phuoc</a>, another farmer in the area, said she harvested around 1 ton in the highest yield in the past but this year she produced only 110kg due to her old age and poor health. “<a href="http://bit.ly/1okGNI3">My children work for industrial parks, I’m the only one who harvests this field</a>,” she shared. “I also hire people to harvest my field but the amount of rice this year is too small, so I’m keeping it for my family to use,” she added. “My family has a tradition of farming; I have worked as a farmer since the age of 16.” Even worse, the ward has been listed in the city’s urban planning project for the past ten years. To many farmers in the Thanh Da peninsula, this land is not only a place to live, it is also their neighborhood and a part of their life. Despite an extensive multinational search southwest of Perth, no wreckage has been identified since the Malaysia Airlines plane vanished on March 8, with objects retrieved from the desolate seas turning out to be fishing gear or flotsam. Retired Australian air chief marshal Angus Houston, who is heading a new coordination centre in Perth, said it was the most challenging search and rescue operation he had ever seen and cautioned about any quick fixes. “I say that because the starting point whenever you do a search and rescue is the last known position of the vehicle or aircraft. In this particular case, the last known position was a long, long way from where the aircraft appears to have gone,” he said in a press conference. Houston noted that it look more than 60 years to find HMAS Sydney, which was sunk in the Indian Ocean in 1941 by a German warship, and the search for MH370 is “not something that’s necessarily going to be resolved in the next two weeks”. “This could drag on for a long time but I think at this stage that it’s very important to pursue all the leads,” he added, as 10 planes and nine ships, some with helicopters, resumed the search in worsening weather. Houston also said that “if we don’t find the wreckage of MH370, we will need to review what to do next.” Malaysia believes the flight, which was en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing carrying 239 people, was deliberately diverted by someone on board and that satellite data indicates it crashed in the Indian Ocean. Houston’s appeal for patience contrasts with the angry demands of Chinese passengers’ relatives who are desperate for firm information on what happened to their loved ones. Australian vessel Ocean Shield, fitted with a US-supplied black box detector known as a “towed pinger locator”, left Perth on Monday but is expected to take up to three days to reach the search zone. The signal from the black box — which records flight data and cockpit voice communications — usually lasts only about 30 days and fears are mounting that time will soon run out. Australian Defence Minister David Johnston admitted there was only a slim chance it would be found as debris needs to be positively identified first to nail down a crash site. “We’ve got about a week (left), but it depends on the temperature of the water and water depth and pressure as to how long the battery power will last,” he told Australian radio. Authorities are scouring a massive expanse of ocean for clues and even if the zone is narrowed down, Ocean Shield must tow the equipment at just five kilometres per hour (3.1 mph) for the pinger to be able to pick up a signal. If floating MH370 debris is eventually found, authorities plan to analyse recent weather patterns and ocean currents to track back to where the plane went down. The seven-nation search effort resumed hours after Malaysia’s civil aviation department said the last words spoken by one of the pilots on the doomed flight were “Good night Malaysian three seven zero”. The phrasing was different to the more casual “All right, good night” originally reported. Aviation experts said the correction to the cockpit wording did not raise any red flags about possible pilot intent. “There is plenty about Malaysia’s handling (of MH370) over which questions may be raised, but I think in the scheme of things this is inconsequential,” said Scott Hamilton, managing director of US-based aviation consultancy Leeham Co. Shortly after the final message, communications were cut and the Boeing 777 vanished from civilian radar. Malaysia insists it has been transparent, rejecting Chinese relatives’ accusations it is guilty of incompetence or even a cover-up, but has repeatedly changed tack on what happened. Notably, there have been about-turns regarding the crucial sequence of events in the cockpit before the plane veered off course, and Malaysia’s air force has been criticised for failing to intercept it when it appeared on military radar. Critics took aim on social media, saying the changed narrative on the cockpit communication showed continued bumbling. “The Malaysian government can’t even get the cockpit sign-off right. Why would we expect they get anything else correct?” said one posting on Twitter. Cu Da ancient village

Village roads are laid with slanting bricks. On road-sides, there are old houses in ancient Viet styles, villas in French styles and newly-built ones. Houses are numbered and it might be the one and only village in Vietnam where houses got numbered. There are about two hundred old houses both in <a href="http://bit.ly/1kh0I4m">Vietnam and French</a> styles, of these, 60 remain almost unchanged. <a href="http://bit.ly/Qy3s51">Houses in Cu Da</a> are low and deep in length, so they are always cool in summer and warm in winter. Architecture is specified in Nguyen feudalist dynasty, nearly made of wood. On beams, pillars, there are delicate sculptures. In the middle of the houses, there are ancestral altars, panels and parallel scrolls. The main village road is built along a riverside, every lane has a gate. The village pagoda is classified as a national relic. <a href="http://bit.ly/1kh0FFN">It’s Linh Minh Tu</a> and a stone column is inscribed “the pagoda was renovated in 1695.” There also remains relic of the village altar to worship “<a href="http://bit.ly/Qy3sle">earth and heavens</a>” or <a href="http://bit.ly/1kh0I4w">Xa Tac</a>, considered to be the most magnificent. There are also houses that were built in years from 1920 – 1940 (<a href="http://bit.ly/1kh0FFX">in new architectural styles</a>). On a river bank, there’s a flag-pole built in 1929, a communal house of the village-council, a school. At one end of the village (<a href="http://bit.ly/Qy3slj">entry road</a>), there’s a low earthen hill named <a href="http://bit.ly/Qy3slm">Dong Gia</a>, it’s thought to be a centuries-old tomb since the old Chinese colony.
