Visiting Mekong Delta’s century old church <div> <p>Tac Say Church in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu, commonly dubbed as Father Diep Church, has been in existence for nearly one century and linked to the life of Truong Buu Diep, a highly respected Vietnamese Catholic priest who is believed to have died in 1946 while protecting his followers during the war.</p> <div> <div> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td></td> </tr> <tr> <td><em>Tac Say Church in Bac Lieu Province is where the remains of priest Truong Buu Diep are buried and remembered</em></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p>Located in Tan Phong Commune, Gia Rai District and right on National Highway 1A towards the country’s southern tip of Ca Mau, the church was constructed in 1925 during the French colonial time. It has undergone several times of restoration thanks to contributions by generous Catholic followers nationwide to make it the largest and most striking cathedral in the Mekong Delta as witnessed today.</p> <p>The church has served as not only a worshipping place for parishioners to practice their religious beliefs but also the resting place of Priest Truong Buu Diep, whose remains are buried in the church campus.</p> <p>Additionally, the church also houses a five-storey pilgrimage center which is open round the clock to cater to pilgrims who wish to stay overnight at no charges. Mountain train from Sa Pa to Fansipan station opens <div> <div> <div><span>Muong Hoa, Vietnam’s longest mountain rail route developed by Sun Group, opens on March 31 (Photo: reatimes.vn)​</span></div> <p> </p> </div> <div><strong>Lao Cai (VNA)</strong> – Muong Hoa, Vietnam’s longest mountain rail route developed by Sun Group, was opened on March 31, connecting Sa Pa Town and the existing cable station to Fansipan Peak. <p>The 2km rail route starts from MGallery Hotel in Sa Pa Town and ends at the cable station to Fansipan Peak, promising a spectacular journey for tourists.</p> <p>The two-carriage train can travel at a maximum speed of 10m per second and serve up to 2,000 guests per hour.</p> <div><span>The Muong Hoa rail route starts from MGallery Hotel in Sa Pa Town and ends at the cable station to Fansipan Peak. (Photo: VNA)</span></div> <p>It will shorten tourists’ travel time from 20 minutes by car over risky mountainous roads to four minutes by train through valleys, viaducts and tunnels offering beautiful views of surrounding villages as well as nature.</p> <p>The two carriages were designed and produced by Swiss company Garaventa. (Photo: VNA)</div> <p>At the Muong Hoa Cable Station, tourists will continue to take the cable route over Hoang Lien Son range to reach Fansipan Peak, the top of Indochina, at a height of 3,143m.</p> <p>The new rail route and the world’s most modern three-rope cable car system, Fansipan Sapa, measuring 6,292.5m in length – which was opened to the public on February 2, 2016 – will complete service at the Sun World Fansipan Legend tourism complex.</p> <p>Located 350km northwest of Hanoi, Sa Pa town in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai is 1,600m above sea level. The town is dominated by the Hoang Lien Son mountain range which features Indochina’s highest mountain of Fansipan at 3,142 m above sea level.</p> <p>Sa Pa has many natural scenic sites such as Ham Rong Mountain, Thac Bac (Silver Waterfall), Cau May (Rattan Bridge), Bamboo Forest and Ta Phin Cave. Agri-tourism development – inevitable trend <div> <div><span>Vineyards in the south central province of Ninh Thuan have become a tourism product (Photo: VNA)</span></div> <p><strong>Hanoi (VNA)</strong> – The enhancement of capitalising on values of the agricultural sector to create high-quality and competitive tourism products is an inevitable trend, said Nguyen Quy Phuong – Director of the Travel Department under the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.</p> <p>He made the remark at a workshop on agri-tourism in Hanoi on March 30. The event was part of the Vietnam International Travel Mart (VITM) 2018.</p> <p>Phuong said tourism and agriculture are two spearhead sectors that the Party and State prioritise in the country’s socio-economic development orientation. In the time ahead, the policies on new-style rural area building and high-quality agriculture development will be favourable conditions for tourism to develop.</p> <p>Over the past time, a number of organisations and individuals in many localities have made use of agricultural factors to develop tourism. Many tourism products imbued with agricultural identities of regions from the north to the south have been created, meeting tourists’ demand.</p> <p>He noted some outstanding tours, including the tour in the rice harvest period in Duong Lam of Hanoi; the tours of Tra Que vegetable village, Thanh Ha pottery village and Cu Lao Cham fishing village in Hoi An of central Quang Nam province; or trips to orchards and floating markets in Can Tho, Vinh Long and Tien Giang in the Mekong Delta.</p> <p>At the workshop, many participants said agri-tourism brought economic and social benefits to many localities and businesses. Some localities and travel companies reported that the number of tourists engaging in agricultural activities has been on the rise. Meanwhile, agri-tourism activities have become a stable source of income for local farmers and businesses.</p> <p>However, they noted, despite the considerable potential for agri-tourism, agri-tourism activities in Vietnam remain unprofessional. Local agricultural and cultural values haven’t been studied methodologically to create high-quality tourism products. Many agri-tourism models still mainly depend on the natural environment and haven’t been renewed, making them no long attractive to travellers.</p> <p>Participants added to boost agri-tourism, the tourism and agriculture sectors need to coordinate to build a national programme on agri-tourism associated with building new-style rural areas. (Photo: VNA)<br /></span></div> <p><strong>Hanoi (VNA)</strong> – The tourism industry saw a strong start in 2018 as the international tourist arrivals to Vietnam reached over 4.2 million people in the first quarter of the year, an increase of 30.9 percent year on year.</p> <p>According to the General Statistics Office (GSO), Vietnam welcomed more than 1.3 million visitors in March, the third consecutive month the foreign tourist arrivals exceeded a million.</p> <p>About 3.1 million foreigners came from Asian countries in the first three months, up 37.6 percent year on year. Visitors from the Republic of Korea showed the highest growth of 69.2 percent, followed by those from China (42.9 percent).</p> <p>Tourists from Europe rose by 15.4 percent from the same period last year with significant growths reported in those from Russia (15.8 percent), the UK (14.4 percent), Sweden (20.6 percent) and France (12 percent). Travellers from America increased by 11.5 percent year on year.</p> <p>The country earned more than 10 trillion VND (440 million USD) from tourism, up 30.3 percent year on year with Ho Chi Minh City posting the strongest surge of 32.3 percent.</p> <p>Vietnam aims to serve between 15 – 17 million foreigners and 78 million domestic travellers this year, with total revenue expected to hit 620 trillion VND (27.28 billion USD), up 21.35 percent year on year.</p> <p>The continuous expansion of the tourism can be partly attributed to Vietnam’s active tourism promotion overseas since the beginning of the year.</p> <p>Earlier this month, the country took part in the 26th Moscow International Travel and Tourism Exhibition (MITT) in Russia, one of the world’s five largest travel fairs held annually since 1994. This event attracted over 1,900 businesses and representatives from 192 countries and territories.</p> <p>Russia ranks sixth in the number of tourists to Vietnam. In 2017, Vietnam received some 574,000 Russian visitors, up 32.3 percent from 2016, who mostly came to central and southern destinations like Nha Trang, Phan Thiet and Phu Quoc. The tourism, services and trade sectors accounted for 70% of the city’s total production value.</p> <p>Tourism has stimulated the growth of local business and production activities. Project to develop Mekong Delta’s tourism adapted to climate change

Project to develop Mekong Delta’s tourism adapted to climate change <div> <div><span>Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc (back, fourth, right) witnessed the signing of the cooperation agreement in Can Tho on March 27 (Photo: VNA)</span></div> <p><strong>Can Tho (VNA)</strong> – The People’s Committee of Can Tho city, the Novaland Group, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and the Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank (MBBank) have teamed up to implement a project on developing the Mekong Delta’s tourism adapted to climate change.</p> <p>They signed the cooperation agreement in Can Tho on March 27 in the presence of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.</p> <p>The project aims to build and carry out a strategy for tourism connectivity and development of the 13 Mekong Delta localities with Can Tho city playing the key role.</p> <p>The parties in this project hope to build suitable models to international standards to tap into the Mekong Delta’s tourism potential while preserving local cultural identities. They also look to improve tourism services and public awareness of environmental protection and help small- and medium-sized enterprises create more jobs for local people.</p> <p>The Mekong Delta is the biggest rice, fruit and aquatic production hub of Vietnam. However, it is also one of the Vietnamese regions most vulnerable to climate change. </p> <p>BCG Managing Director in Vietnam Christopher Lewis Malone said when it is optimised, the Mekong Delta could be a gem of Vietnam’s tourism that is comparable to some of the world’s famous river tourism destinations like the Nile Delta in Egypt.</p> <p>A preliminary estimate of the BCG shows that an additional 300,000 jobs could be generated in the tourism sector by 2025, giving the important diversity to the economy and livelihoods of residents in the Mekong Delta.</p> <p>The cooperation among the Can Tho People’s Committee, Novaland, BCG and MBBank is expected to connect and attract international organisations like the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation, and the Asian Development Bank to fund climate change adaptation in the Mekong Delta.</p> <p>Appreciating the parties in the project, Prime Minister Phuc said it is a must to turn risks into opportunities and challenges into actions in the Mekong Delta. Con Dao beach among top 10 eco friendly beaches in Southeast Asia <div> <p>Dat Tham beach on Con Dao island has been listed as one of the top 10 eco-friendly beaches in Southeast Asia by the UK’s The Independent newspaper.</p> <div> <div> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Con Dao beach is listed in top 10 eco-friendly beaches in Southeast Asia</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p>With the likes of the popular coastal cities of Danang, Nha Trang and Mui Ne now packed with tourists, Dat Tham beach is different, as it’s located in the protected Con Dao National Park, which has allowed it to become one of the few undeveloped stretches of sand left in Vietnam, The Independent wrote.</p> <p>As a part of the national park, Dat Tham Beach is often not accessible to tourists due to the high risk of forest fires. Getting there requires some effort, with visitors clocking-in at the park office before beginning a four-mile hike to the beach.</p> <p>The hike takes you through a dense section of the park and you may catch a glimpse of some of its rare animals, such as giant squirrels and the bow-fingered gecko. Once you reach the shore, you are met with a beautiful (and most likely completely secluded) crescent-shaped bay.</p> <p>Isolated from the mainland, Con Dao is a group of 16 islands. The largest is known as Con Son.</p> <p>Con Dao served as a prison island for political prisoners during the French colonial era, when it was known as Poulo Condore, and in later years the Saigon regime imprisoned its opponents in the infamous cells known as the “tiger cages”.</p> <p>The old prison buildings are still standing and are open to the public, as is a small museum tracing the island’s history.</p> <p>Today, what was “hell on earth” for prisoners has turned into “heaven on earth” for tourists. Beautiful beaches, hidden lagoons, coral reefs and scenic bays are also to be found and the islands remain partially covered by tropical forests, with very few tourists.</p> <p>“In addition to hiking, diving and exploring deserted coastal roads there are excellent wildlife-watching opportunities,” Lonely Planet once wrote. Domestic tours stuck as hotels fully booked by Chinese travellers <div> <p>Travel firms complain they cannot book hotel rooms in Nha Trang and Danang because most rooms have been reserved for Chinese travellers.  </p> <div> <div> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td></td> </tr> <tr> <td><em>Chinese travellers have been flocking to Nha Trang</em></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p>Le Kim Nhut, director of Nha Trang Tre Tourist, and chair of the Nha Trang Tourism Promotion Forum, confirmed that travel firms have had to cancel many tours recently because of the lack of hotel rooms.</p> <p>Tran Thanh Hung told reporters that he needed 3-4-star hotel rooms in Nha Trang city for a group of 40 travelers from Thua Thien-Hue province, but there were no vacancies. “The group of travellers will come to Nha Trang in two months. After seeking help from friends and hotel receptionists, I managed to find a newly built 2-star hotel,” he said.</p> <p>“Though the hotel is far from beaches, we have to pay the room rate of VND1 million ($45.4) per room, which is approximately the rate of 3-4 star hotel room,” he complained. Nhut said most 3-star and more luxury hotels have been booked for inbound tours and need to reserve rooms for travelers from China and Russia.</p> <p>“The travel firms which arrange tours for Chinese and Russian travelers make reservations and pay some money in advance,” he explained. “Some hotels only have 50 rooms, but accept reservations for 60-70 rooms. As a result there are no more rooms for domestic travelers,” he said. Domestic travelers only know at the last minute if they can book a room. In most cases, they can book only luxury rooms or pay high room rates.</p> <p>“Even hotels under two stars are fully occupied because the very high number of Chinese travelers,” he said. A hotel receptionist said travel firms buy hotel rooms in bulk many months or one year in advance.</p> <p>Le Van Son, CEO of 4-star Liberty Nha Trang, said Chinese travellers account for 60 percent of total guests, so the occupancy rate at hotels is always high. However, the hotel room rate has decreased significantly. The room rate at 5-star hotels, for example, plunged by 50 percent from $220 per room per night in 2013 to $110 in 2017.</p> <p>Son expressed concern about the loss of travelers from Europe, Australia and North America. “The number of Chinese travellers is so high, while tourists from traditional markets such as Europe, Australia and North America are on the sharp decrease,” he said.</p> <p>“If we cannot find reasonable solutions, we will lose the markets completely.” The same thing is happening in Danang. Like many other localities nationwide, Nghe An Province has many pagodas and temples that attract visitors, one of which is the Con Temple in Phuong Can Village, Quynh Phuong Commune, Hoang Mai Town.</p> <div> <p>The Con Temple is one of four sacred temples in Nghe An Province. It was built nearly 800 years ago for the worship of the four mother goddesses. The site comprises an inner and outer temple. Its location by the seaside and adjacent to mountains makes for a picturesque backdrop. Though not very large, the temple is where special cultural and historical values converge, making it a sacred place for people to pray for peace and good luck.</p> <p>Tourists to the site can admire 142 precious artifacts and 28 stone and wooden statues from the Le Dynasty. Hoi An International Food Festival kicks off <p>The chefs are members of the World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS) and hail from numerous countries including Germany, Sweden, Russia, Portugal, Greece, the US, Malaysia, India, and Vietnam. The programme is applied for flights departing from April 1 to October 31.</p> <p>A representative of Vietnam Airlines said that last year’s summer promotional programme, which was launched for 14 days, attracted dozens of thousands passengers on domestic and international flights.</p> <p>The carrier has recently extended time for self-check-in by one hour, helping passengers save time in the upcoming peak season. Wind farm – emerging tourist attraction in Bac Lieu <p>A wind farm among the crystal blue sky is becoming a familiar place to ‘check-in’ for young people when visiting the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu. </p> <p>The Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu, which boasts a 56km-long coastline and brisk wind, is an ideal destination for a wind power plant in Vietnam.</p> <p> The once alluvial ground has now become a huge wind farm which generates clean electricity.</p> <p>“Bac Lieu wind power plant generates as much as 300 million kWh for the national electricity grid, contributing to the country’s energy stabilisation, local economic development, while opening new investment opportunities,” said Mr Nguyen Phu Nong, branch director of the Cong Ly Construction, Trading & Tourism Co., Ltd​.</p> <p>The wind farm is located in Vinh Trach Dong commune of Bac Lieu city, about 290km from HCM City. </p> <p>It has a total 62 wind turbines. Each turbine tower is 80 metres high and has a diameter of four metres and weighs more than 200 tonnes. </p> <p>Le Truong Hanh, Chairman of Vinh Trach Dong Commune People’s Committee stated that the wind farm in Vinh Trach Dong commune has brought economic ​efficiency. Thai youth promote tourism in Son La <div><span>The cooperative offers new experiences for tourists. — (Photo: danviet.vn)<br /></span></div> <p><strong>Son La (VNS/VNA)</strong> – At the side of a local hydroelectric reservoir, a group of Thai youngsters are unleashing the economic potential of the northwest mountainous province of Son La.</p> <p>Back in 2014, when La Van Phong had just graduated from university, the idea of ecotourism flashed across his mind. With the assistance of like-minded friends, he established the Quynh Nhai district Ecotourism Group in 2015, which transformed into Quynh Nhai Fishery and Ecotourism Cooperative in 2016.</p> <p>“Our startup capital was only 20 million VND (870 USD). Due to the financial shortage, we struggled to organise tours and had to hire boats. Fortunately, thanks to our considerable knowledge of local history and culture, we became tour guides at the same time we were managing the organisation,” said Lu Van Binh, the cooperative’s deputy director.</p> <p>At present, the cooperative offers several services, ranging from tourism to aquaculture and fish processing.</p> <p>The sightseeing tour on the Son La hydroelectric reservoir, its signature activity, takes tourists to float alongside majestic lofty mountains.</p> <p>“The journey will offer you unique experiences of culture, life and cuisine of White Thai people,” Phong tells his guests.</p> <p>The Temple of Lady Han, the goddess of peaceful aspiration, is the tour’s first destination. Sailing on the boat, tourists are lost in contemplation of the mountains in front of them. Under the reservoir bed lie Quynh Nhai district’s nine communes which were destroyed to construct the provincial hydroelectric power plant, leaving just two above water.</p> <p>On an islet, tourists enjoy traditional Northwest cuisine with grilled fishes and honey marinated chicken. On his second tour with Phong’s cooperative, Le Khac Tung, 25, found everything brand new.</p> <p>“They offer new experiences in every tour. It’s exciting that I can catch, grill and enjoy the freshness of fishes raised in the reservoir,” he told Tuoi tre (Youth) newspaper.</p> <p>“We want to create jobs for people and promote local heritage,” Phong recalled of the motivation that pushed him and his other three friends, Dieu Duc Trong, Tong Van Suong and Lu Van Binh to start the cooperative.</p> <p>After two years, they had offered more than 200 tours on the hydroelectric reservoir and welcomed back several tourists.</p> <p>“Being children of the land, we share with guests the knowledge of local history and culture with pride,” said Phong.</p> <p>Using internet-based methods of marketing, the cooperative reaches a wide range of audiences. During festive seasons, they handle up to ten groups of tourists a day.</p> <p>“We encourage our friends to work for us. It was quite overwhelming but we kept trying to enhance our services,” he said.</p> <p>In the meantime, 40 fish cages were set up, aiming to give tourists a novel culinary experience and provide Son La province’s specialties to the domestic market. In January, 2017, the cooperative started purchasing and processing local fishes.</p> <p>“Marinated with Thai ethnic species then dried, fishes become a special snack which is widely favored in the Northern provinces’ markets. Sold at 200,000 VND (8.8 USD) per kilogram, the product has generated a good profit for us,” Phong said.  </p> <p>The model combining tourism and aquaculture created jobs and sustainable income for eight cooperative members and seven other workers. In the future, Phong expects to expand the market for their dried fish products and construct a complex with a restaurant, motel and local specialties exhibition room to enhance tourists’ experiences in the northwestern mountainous area.</p> <p>Ngan Van Dua, head of the Chieng Bang Commune People’s Committee in Quynh Nhai district, said that the Sơn La hydroelectric reservoir, 72km long and 10km wide, had untapped potential as a tourist destination and fishery site. Therefore, the cooperative’s initiative has helped boost the local economy.</p> <p>Vang A La, Secretary of the provincial Youth Union, praised Long’s start-up as an inspiration for local youngsters. Cai Rang Floating Market to be strong tourism brand of Can Tho <div><span>An aerial view of Cai Rang Floating Market in Can Tho city (Photo: VNA)</span></div> <p><strong>Can Tho (VNA)</strong> – Authorities of Can Tho gathered on March 9 to discuss measures to boost local tourism, especially Cai Rang Floating Market which will be built into a strong tourism brand of the Mekong Delta city.</p> <p>Director of the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Tran Viet Phuong said to turn tourism into a spearhead sector of the city by 2020, local departments and sectors need to coordinate strongly to take synchronous solutions.</p> <p>While the transport department should swiftly complete transport facilities linking with key tourism sites, the health department needs to keep a close watch on popular tourism sites to prevent disease transmission and ensure food safety. The Department of Industry and Trade must strictly manage shops at tourism sites to ensure that goods are sold according to listed prices, he said.</p> <p>Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Le Van Tam asked departments and sectors to assist travel companies in creating new tourism products, which is especially important when many provinces have similar products that are not typical for their localities.</p> <p>Many provinces in the Mekong Delta also have floating markets, and that’s why Cai Rang must be imbued with particular features of Can Tho. (Photo: VNA)<br /></span></div> <p><strong>Hanoi (VNA)</strong> – Si Ma Cai district in Lao Cai is often called the twin sister of Sa Pa.</p> <p>While Sa Pa is a well known tourism destination, its sister Si Ma Cai is a hidden beauty that still retains its serenity and originality.</p> <p>Si Ma Cai district sits in the northwest province of Lao Cai. It is about 95km from Lao Cai city, at the elevation of 1,600 metres above sea level.</p> <p>From Lao Cai city, one can take the bus to Si Ma Cai town. The curving road stretching from the city centre to Si Ma Cai is 95km. At some points it is quite steep.</p> <p>Arriving at Si Ma Cai, visitors can indulge in the pure nature, the mountains and thick forest as well as the fresh atmosphere. They can enjoy the beauty of the pink buckwheat flowers, mingle in the local market space and enjoy the local specialties. </p> <p>The area is surrounded by grand limestone mountain ranges. It is no longer a remote locality as there is a concrete road connecting the district with the neighbouring ones.</p> <p>From the Bac Ha plateau, one drives about 10km to get to Lu Than commune, where the pink buckwheat flower blooms on the hillsides in September.</p> <p>The blend of the green forest and pink violet flowers makes the area look like a painting.</p> <p>Si Ma Cai is also decorated with golden terraced rice fields in Sin Cheng commune, the grey rock garden in San Chai commune or the sea of clouds floating in mountains in Thao Chu Phin. The commune is also home to seemingly endless sa moc (evergreen coniferous trees) forest.</p> <p>A boat tour around the Chay river in Ban Me commune lets you contemplate the tranquil riverscape and valleys.</p> <p>Along with spectacular nature, Si Ma Cai also attracts visitors for its diverse culture formed by different ethnic minorities: Thu Lao, Mong, Tay, Nung. Each has their own costumes, cuisine and architecture.</p> <p>There are a number of options for one to explore the local life and ethnic culture, including the spring festivals and the markets of the Mong, Thu Lao and Nung ethnic groups.</p> <p>The Sin Cheng market takes place every Wednesday with the colourful booths displaying traditional costumes of the Mong ethnic people.</p> <p>There are several local markets worth visiting in Lao Cai: including Bac Ly, Ban Phiet and Coc Ly. The best one is said to be Can Cau market, about ten kilometres from Bac Ha. The market opens every Saturday and on special occasions in the year.</p> <p>When the foggy dew still lingers in trees, local ethnic people with baskets on their backs head to the market, some leading their buffalo or horse, and some carrying a few chickens. Locals in the neighouring districts also gather for trading as this is known as one of the biggest horse and buffalo markets. Men buy horses and buffalo; kids snack in the eateries and women mostly gather in the clothes-selling areas.</p> <p>The market is separated into different areas: cattle, garments and food. Some Mong ethnic people wearing bright colourful clothes make the area look like a flower market.</p> <p>Specialty dishes of the region include maize wine, thang co (a dish made from horse meat and its organs), mountain pork, black chicken and Sin Cheng duck. The Quan Than San Mountain range at the height of 2,800 metres also impresses visitors along with the friendly smiles of locals.</p> <p>Nguyen Van Bach, first-time visitor to Si Ma Cai, said, “I am very impressed with the serenity of the landscape as well as the communal ambiance of the local market. The local people are also very friendly and helpful. Yet a negative here is the poor infrastructure. There are not many accommodations and the eateries are not diverse. There is no hostel or hotel available, so I don’t stay here at night but come to Bac Ha and return Si Ma Cai the day after.”</p> <p>Giang Sin Cho, deputy chairman of the Si Ma Cai District People’s Committee, said, “Tapping the tourism potential is a priority of the locality as well as local people. Cave system in Quang Binh: The charm of heaven under earth <p>By successfully establishing itself as a “kingdom of caves” on the world’s adventure travel map, Quang Binh has targeted the top position among tourist attractions in Southeast Asia, making it a centre of adventure travel in Asia by 2020.</p> <p><strong>A push for tourism from Son Doong “phenomenon”</strong></p> <p>At the end of last year, the Business Insider website released a list of nine amazing caves, with Quang Binh province’s Son Doong Cave claiming the first place. The magnificent cave also ranked first among the world’s top 15 breathtaking destinations that adventurous people should visit once in their lifetime, according to Buzzfeed, an American online social news and entertainment giant.</p> <p>There isn’t any other place in Vietnam, even the popular UNESCO-recognised Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh province, which has been named in most of the prestigious tourist publications and travel columns such as Son Doong. The enormous cavern is also the most-visited by film crews and some of the world’s leading news agencies, such as the BBC, NHK, ABC and the National Geographic, as well as world-famous public figures who are working in politics, sports, and the entertainment industry.</p> <p>The spectacular beauty of the cave has also brought large prizes to photographers John Spies, Carsten Peter and Ryan Deboodt.</p> <p>Despite the expensive price of US$3,000, for a short four-day-one-night tour to explore inside the cave, conquering the cave is still a faraway dream for most enthusiastic cave explorers due to the strict limitation in the number of tourists. The cave welcomed 482 people in 2015 and 460 people in 2016. The province’s Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park has pristine ecosystems, enormous cave systems, and jungles and rivers, making it attractive to nature lovers and fans of adventure travel.</p> <p>While the number of hidden caves which have not yet been discovered at Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park remains unknown, the total length of the caves which have been unearthed there, as of 2015, was up to hundreds of kilometres.</p> <p>Most recently, 57 grottos with a total length of nearly 30 kilometres were discovered in the province by the British Cave Research Association’s exploration team as a result of an investigations conducted over more than a month.</p> <p>The finding shows the vast potential of adventure tours and cave exploration in Quang Binh. As said by Ho Khanh, who found Son Doong, one might not explore the entire matrix of caves in Quang Binh even if he spends all of his lifetime attempting to do so.</p> <p><strong>The dream of a “Kingdom of Adventure Travel in Asia”</strong></p> <p>Quang Binh province’s cave system has become a favourite location for the filming of many of the world’s leading film studios. En (Swallow) cave was scouted to unravel the tale of Peter Pan in the film of the same-name by Warner Bros. The exotic cave also joined Son Doong to be featured in ABC’s Good Morning America programme. Meanwhile, the picturesque beauty of Tu Lan valley and Chuot cave were highlighted in the Hollywood blockbuster “Kong: Skull Island”, which hit the big screens in March 2017. (Photo credit: Oxalis)</em></p> <p>In May 2016, a group of ambassadors to Vietnam from seven countries – Australia, Sweden, Italy and the United Kingdom, Czech Republic and Argentina – joined US Assistant Secretary of State Tom Malinowski and Ambassador Pham Sanh Chau, Head of the Foreign Ministry’s Culture and UNESCO Department, to participate in a seven-day expedition to Son Doong cave. Then US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius also made an unforgettable excursion to the the cave in early 2017.</p> <p>The visits made by the foreign politicians have brought Quang Binh to the spotlight of foreign media, contributing to increasing the number of visitors to the province in 2016 to 686,000, including roughly 78,500 foreigners, from 453,000 people, including 54,000 foreigners in 2015. Con Son-Kiep Bac Spring Festival opened <p>The annual festival commemorates the death anniversary of monk Huyen Quang, who was the third founder of the Truc Lam Zen sect and died in 1334.</p> <p>Also on the occasion, the provincial People’s Committee announced the Decision by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc that recognises the Con Son Tu Phuc Tu Bi stele in Con Son Pagoda as a national treasure.</p> <p>The Con Son Tu Phuc Tu Bi stele dates back to the Le Trung Hung Dynasty (16th -18th century) under the reign of Hoang Dinh (Le Kinh Tong) (1601-1619). It is a precious material about literature, history and fine art, especially for studying the history of Con Son Pagoda.</p> <p>Prior to the opening ceremony of the festival, there was a ceremonial water-carrying parade from Con Son Pagoda to Con Son Lake staged by hundreds of people, where monks and nuns offered incense.</p> <p>The festival, which willl run until March 10, will also feature a variety of cultural and sporting activities such as incense offerings, worship rituals at Ngu Nhac Mountain, folk games, a wrestling contest, and a cake making contest.</p> <p>With its special values, Con Son – Kiep Bac was recognised as a national heritage site in 1962 and a special national heritage site in 2012. Vietnam welcomes over 2.86 million foreigners in two months <p>According to the General Statistics Office, Asian visitors made up the lion’s share of the number, at over 2.12 million people, increasing by 35.8% annually. The number of Chinese visitors, which accounted for 30% of the total tourist arrivals in Vietnam during the period, grew by 38.5% annually.</p> <p>The numbers of tourists arriving by air, road, and sea, during the two-month period, recorded respective annual increases of 26.3%, 58.4%, and 3.5%.</p> <p>The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism said that it aims to serve between 15 and 17 million foreigners and 78 million domestic travellers this year, with the total revenue expected to hit VND620 trillion (US$27.28 billion), up 21.35% annually.</p> <p>Vu The Binh, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association, said that Northeast Asia, including China, the Republic of Korea (RoK), Japan, and Taiwan (China), will continue to be the major sources of tourists to Vietnam.
