A court in Ho Chi Minh City sentenced a young Azerbaijani to jail on Monday for helping three other foreigners steal money from local banks using fake ATM cards.

Aliyev Ruslan Hamdulla was sentenced to a year in prison for cyber fraud, Doi Song & Phap Luat newspaper reported.

Investigators say Hamdulla received a ten percent skim from each transaction from three foreigners who remain at large.

He reportedly stole VND69 million (US$3,240) from local ATM booths using 20 fake cards.

Police say Hamdulla made 61 attempts to steal cash and only succeeded on 16 occasions.

The prosecutors recommended a three to four years jail term, but the judge decided that Hamdulla, a college student, lacked a cohesive understanding of the law and sincerely cooperated throughout the investigation.

Police in Ho Chi Minh City caught him last year, on March 31, after guards at a BIDV booth noticed that he had tried to withdraw money with three cards and one did not work.

Hamdulla said his employers, whom he knew little about, had hired him in early March.
